MSU Engineering Design Day Friday

EAST LANSING (WWJ) -- More than 400 students are set to showcase their innovation and technical skills on Friday, Dec. 6, at this autumn's Design Day in the MSU College of Engineering.

Thousands of participants and guests will fill the Engineering Building on campus, 428 S. Shaw Lane, East Lansing, to see demonstrations, competitions and posters from 8 a.m. to noon. Among them will be:
• A team of computer science and engineering seniors presenting an augmented reality automobile guide application that lets a car shopper point their smart phone at a new car to grab all the information on it instantly and store it for easy access during the final buying decision. The research project is funded by General Motors.
• Another team of CSE seniors presenting a "smart start savers" iPad application that helps local elementary and middle school students learn about banking and saving. The project is funded by the MSU Federal Credit Union to reinforce the importance of teaching children how to save.
• A team of mechanical engineering seniors presenting ways to improve the use of carboline paint containers and a new means of handling unused paint, which now has to be disposed of at a significant cost. Students will be suggesting a nonhazardous option. Union Pacific Railroad funds the project.

Award ceremonies are at 1:15 p.m. Friday in 1281 Anthony Hall, located on the east end of the Engineering Building.

The capstone projects involve 30 companies, 21 of which are based in Michigan, and 38 student teams comprised of 171 students.

This semester's Design Day sponsors include General Motors, Whirlpool, ArcelorMital, Bosch, MSU Federal Credit Union, Norfolk Southern, TechSmith and USAA.

Also on exhibit will be projects developed in a freshman engineering course, Engineering 100, Introduction to Engineering Design. About 150 students in grades 7-12 will visit Design Day, enabling interaction in hands-on robotic and structural support system activities and serving as judges for "People's Choice" awards for the most popular projects.
