Michigan's Teen Summer Job Market Improving
LANSING (AP) - State labor officials say they expect the teen unemployment rate will drop slightly this summer as more applicants find work.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget said Tuesday that the teen unemployment rate is expected to drop from 28.6 percent to 26.4 percent. As a result, 6,200 fewer teens are projected to be jobless.
Officials say the teen job outlook has been improving along with the rest of the state's labor market but it remains a highly competitive market for those in the hunt. Teens might face additional competition from older workers seeking summer job openings.
The department says about 287,400 teens are expected to seek work this summer. That's essentially unchanged from last year. About 211,500 are projected to find jobs, an increase of 6,700.
