Michigan Students Earn Top Awards In Army STEM Competition

The United States Army's eCybermission competition announced first- and second-place winning teams from Michigan for its 2010-11 competition.

ECybermission is a free, Web-based competition in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for students in grades six through nine that promotes teamwork and creativity as a way to encourage students to become more involved in STEM education.

The following students demonstrated a strong understanding of the STEM subjects, aptly applying what they have learned in the classroom to a real-life problem in their community.

First-Place Winning Teams:
* Sixth Grade -- Team: ConservatorsH2O; School: East Middle School,
Plymouth; Team Advisor Bala Chander with students Harish Chander, Sameed Khan and Shrila Rajendran (Environment)
* Seventh Grade – Team: RADIANS; School: Academic Center of Science, Farmington Hills; Team Advisor Bhagyashri Chander with students Rishab Chander, Ashwath Muruganand and Joshen Patel (Environment)
* Eighth Grade – Team: 2nd Dream Team; School: Saint Joseph School, Lake Orion; Team Advisor Sue Tyner with students Jacob Bauss, Carson Eby, Joshua Fullerton and Nathaniel Olson (Speed, Velocity, Acceleration, Vectors & Scalars)
* Ninth Grade – Team: Mwali Kuku; School: Ida High School; Team Advisor Jacob Anastasoff with students Jamie Comstock, Lucas Gerweck, Kyle Polak and Linnea Vicari (Environment)

Second-Place Winning Teams:
* Eighth Grade – Team: Olympians; School: Saint Joseph School, Lake Orion; Team Advisor Sue Tyner with students Daniel Ciarelli, Ryan DeBaker, Joseph Margevicius and Mark Shakespear (Environment)
* Ninth Grade – Team: Toxic Heights; School: Ida High School; Team Advisor Jacob Anastasoff with students Joshua Bastian, Garrett Madden, Cody Potter and Jarrod Sawasky (Environment)

All students on the first-place winning teams will receive $1,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds, and each student on the second-place winning teams will receive $500 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds. The first-place winning teams will move on to the regional competition, where they will compete with teams in their grade for an additional $2,000 in savings bonds and a chance to attend the National Judging and Educational Event, taking place in Washington, D.C. in June.

Michigan had 68 teams register for the 2010-2011 eCybermission competition, with 22 teams submitting Mission Folders, or final projects. More at (866) GO-CYBER (462-9237) or email katherine.smith@ecybermission.com.
