Armed Man On Baseball Field Leads To Lockdown At Oakland County School

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. (WWJ) - A scary situation involving a gun at an Oakland County high school led to a lockdown Monday, but no one was hurt.

Birmingham Public Superintendent Dan Nerad said they got a call from police at around 10:45 a.m. regarding a "despondent individual" who had a loaded gun on the baseball field Groves High School in Beverly Hills.

Beverly Hills Police were assisted by Southfield police in dealing with the crisis, parents lined 13 Mile Road after learning about the lockdown on social media.

A text eventually alerted parents to the situation and a follow-up email cautioned that police may be on the high school grounds throughout the day.

One woman told WWJ's Dave Ramos her child didn't believe the report at first. "And she said 'You're lying!' and (another student) thought it was a drill, but the school was locked down."

Nerad acknowledged it's hard to know what's legitimate and what's not in the age of social media.

The armed young man, who wasn't a current student or staff member at Groves, was taken to a local hospital and the all-clear was given just before 11:30 a.m.

No further details about the incident were immediately released.
