Matt Dery's Random Thoughts: Cousins Has To Win
1. Each week we go back and forth in the battle of which sport is better, college football or the NFL? Two weekends ago, the college game had a big showing with epic finishes and nail-biters like Ohio State/Wisconsin and Stanford/USC. Yesterday, the NFL was off-the-chain with some amazing 4:15 games and great drama last night in Pittsburgh with the Ravens coming back to edge the Steelers. It also did not help that LSU/Bama was a complete snooze on Saturday.
The NFL is king, but the competition right now and uncertainty in the college game to me is more intriguing. LSU is also very beatable, due to their serious flaws at QB. The Packers? I'm not so sure anybody can stop Aaron Rodgers.
2. Jamey Carroll reportedly is interested in the Tigers. The free agent second baseman has other suitors, including the Rockies, but he is 37 and can barely hit the ball to the warning track. I loved JC as a utility guy with the Indians back in 2008-2009, but I would rather remain in-house with Ramon Santiago if you are going to go sign Carroll.
3. Michigan fans are livid with the officials from Saturday's loss at Iowa. I get it. I understand. You can argue that Junior Hemingway made that catch on 2nd and goal from the Iowa 3 yard line and the game should have been 24-22 with a two-point conversion to come. I saw a blatant case of pass interference on the game's final play when Roy Roundtree was held in the end zone. I saw it. You saw it. We all saw it. But, Michigan was outplayed in that game. Iowa showed great efficiency on offense and played mistake-free, while UM turned it over twice and Denard Robinson missed on 20 of his 37 pass attempts. He hits a wide open Roundtree with just under 2 minutes left and then there is no discussion about Hemingway and instant replay minutes later.
4. Kirk Cousins has to win the game for MSU this weekend at Iowa. He has to. The Hawkeyes will load the box and make him make throws. The Spartans' offensive line has improved this season from September, but they just do not push off the ball like they did a year ago. I also favor Dantonio over Ferentz in a tight game when it comes down to decision making.
5. Come on NBA. Players and owners are closer than they think to getting a deal done. Just do the deal.
