Man In Critical Condition After Fire At Boyne Highlands Ski Resort; Arson Suspected

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - One of the 12 people injured in a weekend fire at a northern Michigan ski resort is in critical condition.

Spectrum Health Butterworth spokeswoman Beth Cranson confirmed 23-year-old David Chauvette's condition Monday but declined to discuss his specific health problems. A Facebook page created for Chauvette says the Traverse City man suffered smoke inhalation after being trapped in his room.

The fire occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the main lodge at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs. There were 113 guests in 64 rooms. The cause of the fire is under investigation, although the local sheriff says it started on the third floor.

According to reports, investigators suspect one of the guests lit a fire in their room, then stole the fire extinguishers before leaving the resort. .

Boyne says 40 percent of the lodge has some fire damage, and much of the rest of the building was affected by smoke and water.
