Man Found Guilty Of Murder In Grandfather's Hatchet-Slaying

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - A man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the hacking and bludgeoning of his 71-year-old grandfather at the older man's Muskegon Township home.

The Muskegon Chronicle and WZZM-TV report that a western Michigan jury returned its verdict Thursday against 26-year-old Trent Humphreys-McPherson.

Humphreys-McPherson will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Dennis McPherson was attacked Jan. 9 with a hatchet. Humphreys-McPherson was accused of breaking glass on a door to get into the home.

The newspaper reports that prosecutors have theorized the motive behind the attack may have been to get money to pay for drugs.
