Making The High School/College Transition

Making the move from high school to college means recognizing some big differences in learning style. One of the biggest ones relates to study habits.

College students have less class time but more to learn during that time. They also have less face time with their professors. Where high school teachers remind students about assignments, professors expect students to keep on top of deadlines. Late assignments are unacceptable; extra credit points are strictly high school.

Professors guide students and are resources for them but students need to be determined to succeed. Taking the initiative to make an appointment with a professor during office hours can be valuable. One-on-one talks give students the chance to express concerns and set expectations for the semester.

Managing study sessions will soon become routine for them, which boosts confidence and shows them that they can navigate their way through the life-altering experience called college.
