Macomb County Holds Road Clean-Up Event

(WWJ) Areas along Michigan freeways are in for a spring cleaning this weekend.

Following months of pushing snow and slush off the roads, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said Macomb County roads crews  shifted to picking up debris on the highway. Interstates 696 and 94 have been cleared, he said.

And now they're hoping the public wants to help out on secondary roads.

"It's a public safety issue, making sure debris isn't on the roadway," Hackel said. "The other is an environmental issue, making sure it doesn't end up in Lake St. Clair."

Hackel's Adopt-a-County road cleanup program volunteers will be out and about this weekend, picking up all the trash they can find.

Similar cleanups started 30 years ago, but Hackel says participation has dropped and he's hoping more families and groups will get involved.

He said the goal is to get people to do clean up in the spring and again in the fall.

Since the program started, volunteers have collected two million bags of trash.

The volunteer staging area is at Captain's Party Store, 25450 North River Road, Harrison Township, near the I-94 and North River Road exit

"No one like to come into a community and see all this debris," Hackel said.
