Local Islamic Leader Takes Issue With bin Laden's Burial At Sea
DETROIT (WWJ) - A local Islamic leader is taking issue with Osama bin Laden's burial at sea.
Imam Abdullah El-Amin with the Muslim Center in Detroit says there's a very specific manner in which the body of a Muslim is to be handled after death.
"We first take the body and we wash the body, we give the body a bath and we have special prayers that we say over the body," says El-Amin.
"We have to respect the vessel as if the blood and the air are still flowing through it, regardless of what they might have done in this life, because we all fall short in the eyes of God as to our deeds on this side of the existence," El-Amin.
Al-Amin says that burying the body at sea is usually something that's done if the person dies at sea.
"The only way you would bury someone at sea is if they maybe had died at sea or if they were on a long cruise and there is no other way to dispose of the body," El-Amin says.
