Livernois/Avon Traffic Shift Starts Friday
ROCHESTER (WWJ) - Motorists heading through Rochester Hills may want to avoid the Livernois/Avon intersection beginning this Friday.
Craig Bryson with the Road Commission for Oakland County tells WWJ that they'll start restricting traffic at Livernois and Avon because the bridges over the Clinton River can no longer support a lot of weight.
"Our bridge inspector has informed us that some of the beams on both bridges are deteriorating to the point that we really can't have traffic on those lanes, supported by those beams anymore. That means we've got to close those lanes which takes away the turn lanes at the Livernois/Avon intersection," Bryson said.
"There will actually be two lanes in a couple of directions, but you'll only be able to go in one direction at a time. One direction will have the green light, and it will change to the next direction," he said.
According to Bryson, the traffic shift will remain in effect until the bridges can be rebuilt in a couple of year.
"At this point we have funding to replace the Avon Road bridge in 2013. And, so (the traffic shift) could potentially be in place until 2013. We're doing everything we can to see if there's anyway we can move the bridge replacement up, sooner," Bryson said.
