Leyland Satisfied With Winning Road Trip

Jim Leyland has confessed in recent weeks to scoreboard-watching -- every day of the season, in fact -- but not obsessing over it.

"We're not even in August yet," Leyland said Wednesday after the host Chicago White Sox defeated Detroit 2-1 for its second win of the three-game series. "You can look at it a lot of ways. We went to Minnesota and Chicago and came home 4-3.

"I look at it like that's pretty good. Yeah, would you like to take two out of three? Absolutely, but we did OK. We're kind of plugging along, and we're doing OK.

"(Wednesday) was a little disappointing, not because we got beat. Just because we had some poor at-bats with runners in scoring position."

So Detroit returns home to face a team that just turned in a no-hitter, the Los Angeles Angels.

The Tigers, who hold a two-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central, have a general manager who is searching for a starting pitcher and an owner who just turned 82 and is expressing a certain amount of impatience with not being able to get his hands on the World Series trophy.

And all Jim Leyland will be thinking of on the flight from Chicago to Detroit is beating the Angels on Thursday afternoon, nothing beyond that.
