LEYLAND GIVES UP?
ROB SANFORD
We all say things we later regret when we get mad. Sometimes you're forgiven and sometimes you're not. I bring this up after much written about tirade that Jim Leyland had in New York. In the profanity laced blow up.....Leyland told an umpire, (I'm paraphrasing) "the Yankees are going to the playoffs, and we aren't." Now I don't know about you, but the fact it's mid-August and the Tigers are still mathamatically in it, I take offense by Leyland's remark. If you want the fans to continue to support the team, how can that happen, when the club's chief cheerleader, the manager, doesn't believe. I know the comments were not made to the media and it was part of an overall argument, but still....
The Cleveland Indians are now the opposition, and while the Tigers have little chance of overtaking both the White Sox and Twins....it would still be nice to see them play well. This would be a good time for the team to break out and score some runs. The fact, starting pitching wasn't all that good in the first half, it's really showing up now. In an earlier post....I expressed concerns that the bullpen was being used too often. Now after injuries and fatigue, the relief staff looks like they're need of relief themselves.
It surprising that the Tigers put both Brandon Inge and Johnny Damon on the waiver list. That doesn't mean they are automatically gone....because if a team tries to put a claim on one of them...they can be withdrawn. But, by expressing an interest the club will know who to contact if they should want to trade them.
