Leshoure Faces Bench Warrant, Lions Are Mum

DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket) Berrien County court staff confirmed Tuesday a bench warrant is the next step for the Detroit Lions Mikel Leshoure, 22, who was charged twice in a month with marijuana possession and failed to appear at his scheduled court date Monday.

Cathy Stone, an administrator at the court in St. Joseph, said they've had no contact with Leshoure or a representative. He has no attorney on record.

"We don't reschedule once they failed to appear," Stone said. "Once that happens, a warrant is issued."

She later clarified, saying only the prosecutor can issue a warrant, and one hasn't been delivered in this case.

Reached for comment, the Detroit Lions said they have nothing to add to yesterday's statement, which said, "We are aware of the reports. We are gathering more information and have no further comment at this time."

The Detroit News reported Leshoure had a tough upbringing, with his mother and father both incarcerated on drug charges when he was born. He was born at Dwight Correctional Center in Illinois.

Leshoure was the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He tore his Achilles tendon August 8, 2011, and missed his entire rookie season. Coach Jim Schwartz said on Monday -- before the charges came to light -- that Leshoure is expected to return next season in full health

Leshoure was first stopped Feb. 18 in Benton Township and charged with possession of marijuana; he pleaded guilty March 1 to a lesser charge of use of marijuana and paid $485 in court costs and fines.

On the latest stop March 12th, police said Leshoure was spotted trying to shove marijuana into his mouth. The cop told him to spit it out, the chief said, and Leshoure complied. He allegedly told the officer later that most of what he had in his mouth was just potpourri.

"Reporting officer, while speaking with the passenger (Leshoure) observed that he was chewing marijuana," the report says. "(The officer) also observed small pieces of marijuana down the front of his shirt."

The report says pot was spotted on the floorboards, the center console and both front seats. A half-smoked blunt was allegedly in a cup of water in the console. Police ticketed Leshoure and his friend and dropped them off at a nearby McDonald's to wait for a ride home while the car they were in was towed.

Leshoure was tooling around in a rented2012 Mitsubishi Endeavor with a 21-year-old friend, neither of whom had a valid Michigan driver's license. Both had suspended licenses.
