Suspect with shotgun in Ypsilanti reported dead, Michigan State Police investigating
A man is dead after a police pursuit, crash and shooting involving an officer about 2 a.m. Tuesday in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says it has since turned over the investigation to Michigan State Police, but provided a preliminary report of the circumstances.
Shortly before 2 a.m., deputies saw a van traveling without headlights or a license plate in the area of Michigan Avenue and Prospect Road in Ypsilanti. Officers tried to do a traffic stop, but the driver fled, the sheriff's office said.
During the pursuit, the van was driving the wrong way on Grove Road. The driver also tried to ram an officer and deputy vehicles, the sheriff's office said.
Then about 2:07 a.m., the van crashed with a Washtenaw County sheriff's vehicle in the area of South Prospect Street near Towner Street. "Shortly after the crash, reports of shots fired were received and Metro Dispatch was advised the suspect was armed with a shotgun," the report said.
A bystander told CBS News Detroit that he heard gunshots during the incident.
Huron Valley Ambulance and additional first responders were called to the scene, deputies said, and the driver was discovered to be deceased.
No injuries were reported to bystanders or law enforcement.
"Any loss of life and any officer involved shooting is a tragedy," the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said, adding "in accordance with best practices, this investigation has been turned over to and is being led by the Michigan State Police so no additional details can be shared at this time."
State police said its First District Investigation Section will submit a report to the prosecutor's office for review after the investigation is complete.
