Laid-Off School Workers Await Ruling

Laid-off workers in the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District will have to wait for a Michigan Employment Relations Commission ruling to find out if they can return to work.

The commission is expected to decide Dec. 2 about whether the 28 workers who were laid off last month when the district privatized its custodial and maintenance services can return.

District officials tell The Detroit News the district turned over operations to a national firm to save an estimated $1.4 million to $1.7 million in the next school year.

Union officials say the district broke a three-year contract guaranteeing their jobs. They filed unfair labor practice and regressive bargaining complaints.
