Kids Mowing Lawn Find Suspected Hand Grenades On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Two kids mowing a lawn on Detroit's east side found a couple of hand grenades and even threw one device before calling police, according to reports.

The suspected grenades were found just before 9 p.m. Thursday in a yard behind a home on Binder Street, in a neighborhood near 7 Mile and Ryan roads.

The kids threw one grenade after they found it, but the device did not detonate, WXYZ-TV reported.

The Detroit Police Department's bomb squad responded to the neighborhood and removed the devices. One home was evacuated as the situation unfolded.

Authorities didn't immediately determine whether the devices were live grenades.

Capt. Constance Slappie told the TV station they were extremely thankful no one was injured, especially the children who handled the possible explosives.

"We've spoken to the parents to reiterate to them, not to touch a device of this magnitude and to call the police immediately," she said.
