Journalism In This Town Hits An All-Time Lowe
I happen to think that our local papers do a pretty average job of covering our local teams. It used to be a lot better and I understand that the newspaper business has changed. I have never been a "beat-writer" nor have I ever had to cover close to 162 baseball games in a summer. It is not an easy job, I get that. But for some odd reason, in Detroit, the fellas that cover the Tigers think it is their duty to root for them. This has been going on for years. I do not get it. If you want exhibit A, check out the link below:
The team has dropped four of its last five. The Tigers have been unable to hit the opponent's starting pitcher on most nights, and again it happened last night in Anaheim against Scott Kazmir. Yet, John Lowe's game story was all about how a rookie center fielder is now Rickey Freaking Henderson? Austin Jackson is going to be a fine player, and yes, I watched the game, he had a very good final three innings. But this is outrageous! They LOST!!! Miguel Cabrera hit the three run double that "led the alleged comeback". The Tigers must love this. It is almost like they have an extra guy on payroll, yet the Freep is the one cutting the checks. In comparison, the Indians lost to the Twins last night and looked bad doing it, and here is what Cleveland Plain Dealer beat-writer Paul Hoynes had to say about it:
"The Indians entered the game with the second-best defense in the American League. In the third inning, they turned into your 5-year-old's tee-ball team, and that's being unkind to tee-ballers everywhere".
"Masterson probably should have stayed in bed instead of taking the mound on Tuesday".
I rest my case. I hope you see what I see.
