This is 8MK calling…" On August 20th, 1920 – the first commercial radio station in America signed on with those words from a small studio at the Detroit News. Only about a thousand homes in Michigan had the equipment to hear the new form of communication that became WWJ Newsradio 950.
WWJ rapidly introduced the world to a variety of new experiences – finding innovative ways to provide programming using this new technology.

The station provided a long series of innovative "firsts" -- including:
• The first broadcast of a news program
• The first broadcast of election returns
• The first sportscast
• By broadcasting a Detroit Symphony Orchestra concert – the first station to broadcast a symphony
• The fist regularly scheduled religious broadcast
• The first play-by play of Michigan Football – when they played Wisconsin
• The first broadcast of Detroit Tigers game
• And the first broadcast from an airplane
