Jim Leyland Thinks Leadership Is BS

By: Jeff Riger

Despite the Tigers winning a weekend series against the Pirates; questions still exist as to what is wrong with this year's team? There have been many people blamed so far for the 20-21 start such as Ryan Raburn, Jose Valverde, Octavio Dotel, Jim Leyland and of course we can't forget about Brandon Inge too. And, nobody is disagreeing! Everyone already listed and others as well should share the blame for an underwhelming start minus one key element; LEADERSHIP. At least that is according to Leyland.

During the Tigers inability to win back to back games, fans everywhere have wondered about the Detroit leaders. Who are they? Are they doing their job?

Those same questions were asked of Leyland before the Justin Verlander 1 hitter on Friday night and you might be shocked by his answers.

"Guys that knock in runs, guys that pitch shut outs and guys hit it over the (expletive) fence" Leyland said when he was asked who the leaders were on this Tiger team? The skipper went on saying "I never seen a (expletive) guy yet that hits .200 or .220 that was a leader, never in my (expletive) life, I hear all that (expletive) in the clubhouse about leadership, yeah Victor (Martinez) was a leader last year, he knocked in a hundred and something (expletive ) runs."

So it's pretty obvious that Leyland doesn't believe in leadership in baseball. And, I agree!

But what about other sports? Like in basketball with a point guard being a leader or football with the quarterback?

"Quarterback gets the credit for being the leader and I'm sure he is, I don't know? Every (expletive) game I watch a receiver is pulling one over his head with one (expletive) hand and stepping on the line to make sure he doesn't go out of bounds, catches it with one hand" Leyland said. The skipper went on saying "The QB is like whoa I completed another pass and the receiver caught it with his foot about that far and tipped toed and caught it with one hand and the quarterback got the credit. So who's the leader? The guy that threw it or the guy that caught it? I don't know!"

It's pretty apparent Leyland doesn't believe in leadership no matter the sport or maybe even the job? Do you agree?
