Jeff Riger: Winning Game Four Gets Them More!

The Wings won game four 4-3 against the Sharks at the Joe and at least for a day remain in the Stanley Cup playoffs. During the course of the game, I saw so many things and experienced so many emotions that I wanted to share some of them with you. So below are just a few of the things that I took away from game four on Friday night.

-Unreal goals
If you watched game four you saw probably two of the prettiest goals you will see in not only playoff hockey but in hockey all together. The first was from Todd Bertuzzi who did a spin-a-rama before back handing a puck past Sharks goalie Anti Niemi in the first period. I'm not sure what was more impressive, the actual goal or the celebration that came after as Bertuzzi gave multiple fist pumps as if he were sending a message to San Jose saying "we aint going away that easy." The second goal came from Nick Lidstrom which was his second of the game. Henrik Zetterberg passed a bouncing puck to the Captain where Nick was able to hit it out of the air and send what looked to be the equivalent of a ground ball past Niemi. You could give the world's best player a million chances at that same play and I'm not sure they would be able to accomplish the same feat.

-Blown lead
The one thing that stuck with me about the San Jose Sharks coming into this series was a game I saw them play in the first round of the playoffs against the Kings. LA took a 4-0 lead only to see San Jose come back and win that game in overtime 6 to 5. Well they did it again to a lesser extent as Detroit led 3-nothing on Friday night before San Jose netter three unanswered threatening to force overtime once again. In fact through this entire series, I have been very impressed with the resiliency of the Sharks. They overcame a one goal lead in the 3rd period of games 1 and 3 and were able to come from 3 back on Friday night. If San Jose ends up winning this series, it will be that trait that will be part of the reason.

-The crowd
People love to talk about Red Wings fans and call them spoiled and complacent. I'm not exactly sure why they say what they say but they do and after a while even though it might not be true people just start to believe it. Well on Friday night nobody could make the argument that Wings fans didn't care about what was going on in game four. When Bertuzzi scored the game's first goal, the crowd erupted into the "Todd Bertuzzi" chant and then in the weaning moments of the third period when Detroit was peppering Neimi with puck after the puck the place could not be louder. Oh wait, yes it could, it was louder when Darren Helm finally lit the lamp leaving total bedlam at the Joe. The Wings have had some great crowds and atmospheres in Downtown Detroit this season, but what I experienced Friday night in the third period was the best I have ever seen or felt. The drama was in the air, fans were into it and you could tell that the entire crowd was doing something that is impossible...holding their breath but screaming at the top of their lungs at the same time. People always say that there is nothing like playoff hockey, well Friday night was just another example of why.

-Gutsy call
The Wings did not want to let game four go into overtime! The Sharks win overtime games, so Detroit was desperate to win it in regulation which they ended up doing. But it was the way they won it! Mike Babcock was only playing three lines at that point and one of them included Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves and Justin Abdelkader. Now the Helm line had given up a goal earlier in the game but it did not stop Babcock from putting them back out there in the most crucial part of the contest. Fans expected the Pavel Datsyuk and Zetterberg line to be out there, but to play Helm in that situation and then to see him score the game winner could only provide a type of confidence that he could not get another way. Also Helm, with as good as he has been this season is considered to be unable to finish. Well Friday night he finished in the biggest possible way!

-MOJO
I don't know if you believe in karma or fate or even luck but if you do then maybe the hockey gods were sending you a sign on Friday night. From the Lidstrom goal that he hit out of the air and past Neimi to the Helm game winner, if there was such a thing as the three things stated above then maybe this could be the start of it. I'm not big on believing that one play can define and win a team a series but I do believe in things to look back on. Meaning if the Wings were to become the fourth team ever in NHL history to come back from a 3-0 deficit then yes I would look back to either the Lidstrom or Helm goal as maybe the turning point of the series. Of course all that talk goes away if the Wings get beat in game five on Sunday.

So there it is, some of the thoughts and feelings that I experienced through the course of the game on Friday night. How great is it that we get to do it all over again on Sunday. What stuck out to you?
