Jamie Samuelsen: Wings Streak Is Nice – But That's All It Is

There's no doubt that the Red Wings are the most underappreciated team in Detroit.

There's no doubt that regular season success is a LOT harder than any of us can possibly imagine.

There's no doubt that most Red Wings fans judge success or failure based solely on what happens in the playoffs and whether Cups are hoisted over heads.

Head Coach Mike Babcock isn't one of those people. He has consistently argued that the Wings regular season success shouldn't be glossed over. Sure, he has the same goals as all the players. He knows that the team's legacy (and his legacy) is measured by banners. And he knows that no banners will be hung for winning 20 or 21 consecutive home games.

Which raises the question – what are we supposed to make of this streak?

For a team that's known for greatness, regular season milestones seem pretty pedestrian. As a barometer – let me ask you this Wings trivia question. In the 1995-1996 regular season, the Red Wings set a league record for most points and most wins in a season. Can you tell me how many games they won and how many points that accumulated?

I know I couldn't. I thought they won about 61 games and piled up about 130. I wasn't too far off. The 1996 Red Wings finished 62-13-7 with 131 points. They of course lost in the Western Conference Finals to the Avalanche who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

My point – regular season accomplishments are great. They show how hard this teams plays and how well they're coached. And that's it. We won't remember this streak in 20 years. We won't remember the exact number (unless it stays at 20 which is a nice round number). We probably won't even remember the year that they accomplished it. We remember Cups in Detroit. That's it. And that's how it should be.

Or, as Babcock put it so well on Sunday night. Teams don't get together in 20 years to remember 20-game home winning streaks. They get together to remember Stanley Cups.
