Indie Art Market Opens This Weekend

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Felt "zombie" rabbits, locally made spices and handmade porcelain pendants.  Those are just a few of the original works of art that will be for sale at the new "Rust Belt Market" opening in Ferndale this weekend.

Owner Tiffany Best of Oxford said that the market will be open each weekend at the former Old Navy store on Woodward, with about 70 indie artists showing their work.

One artist even sells his t-shirts out of an old prison laundry truck that looks like an ice cream truck.

"A local designer who used to work for Campbell-Ewald named Chris Gorski... He sells his one-of-a-kind t-shirts, hand drawn, printed in the USA out of the truck," Best said.

And she said, although it's tempting for the money it would bring in,  you won't find any vendors selling knockoff goods made overseas at her market.

"You're always going to find those people, but sometimes you have to really seek out the talent and that's what my husband and I are willing to do."

And she added, "We won't allow any overseas goods to be sold in here, unless it's a one of a kind vintage piece."

Each weekend, a local band will play in the store.

The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday each week.
