Hungry Cops Disciplined In Food Stamp Probe
LANSING (AP) — Police investigating food-aid fraud in Lansing got too close to the goodies.
Three Lansing officers are suspended and many others have been disciplined for eating food that was supposed to be donated or thrown away.
Chief Mike Yankowski says 17 officers used "poor judgment" while investigating the misuse of debit-style cards that replaced food stamps. Officers assisting federal authorities bought and ate food worth nearly $14,000.
Yankowski says it was mostly snack food. He says all liquor purchases have been accounted for.
State authorities investigated the officers but declined to file criminal charges.
