Hundreds Of Michigan Schools Closed After Weekend Snow

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Hundreds of Michigan schools are closed as the state digs out from nearly a foot of snow that fell over the weekend.

In southeastern Michigan, schools are closed Monday in Detroit and surrounding Wayne County as well as counties including Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Monroe. Wayne State University in Detroit is closed. And schools are shut in St. Clair and Lapeer counties.

The National Weather Service reports more than 11 inches fell in Mount Clemens, Ann Arbor and Oakland County's White Lake Township. Flint got more than 10 inches.

Roads are slippery. Elsewhere in the state, many schools were closed in the Kalamazoo area including Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

There was so much snow that even some garbage trucks were not able to make it out to pick up trash on Monday. Officials say GFL Environmental Corporation, which took over Rizzo, would not be picking up trash in any of the cities where they normally work like Sterling Heights and Livonia. Collection days will be delayed one day all week, similar to a holiday.

In Clinton County on Sunday, a teenage passenger was killed when his car slid into the path of a pickup truck.
