Hundreds Expected At MAB Career Fair

The world of media is changing -- fast -- and there's an opportunity to jump on board.

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation is hosting a career and networking fair 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Specs Howard School of Media Arts, 19900 West 9 Mile Road, Southfield.

Looking for a job? Dress for the position you want, bring copies of your resume, and have a link ready for your own website or e-portfolio.

Dick Kernen, vice president of Industry Relations for Specs Howard, said there will be positions available for people well-versed in today's new media fundamentals. Hundreds of applicants are expected.

"Starting three years ago it became clear to us that we had to stop thinking in boxes," Kernen said. "The job market requires not just a specialty, but all of these skills -- designing websites, creating content, broadcast, and social media.

"Radio stations are hiring people to operate cameras, edit video, run websites, produce content, the whole nine yards."

The world is changing so fast that Specs changed its name. "We had forever been the 'Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts,' and we dropped 'broadcast arts' for 'media,'" Kernen said

Thinking about a career switch to media arts? You're not alone.

Specs Howard's student body has expanded so quickly that 3,000 square feet of teaching space was recently added to the Farmington Hills campus and 4,000 square feet to the Southfield site.

The newest program, called "digital media arts," is available at both locations.

"The idea is to cover all of those bases," Kernen said. "People who come out of the program are conversant in high-end video editing, camera work, all of the high-end software. It's a very, very popular program."
