Help Wanted To Feed A Hungry Kid

BERKLEY (WWJ) - With summer is just around the corner, many Metro Detroit parents who depend on school lunch programs are wondering how they will keep their kids fed during vacation time.

This Saturday, April 12, WWJ Newsradio 950  is teaming up with Lighthouse of Oakland County and Hiller's markets to help stock the Lighthouse food pantry with kid-friendly foods.

"Seven-hundred-and-fifty-thousand children in Michigan are chronically hungry," said Jim Hiller, in an interview with WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne. "That's a number that's not just horrifying ... one that we should all be ashamed of."

The Hiller's locations in Berkley, Commerce Township, Union Lake and West Bloomfield will have volunteers onsite that day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lists of kid-focused non-perishable, healthy food items that are in dire need during the summer months when low-income school-aged children are not in school.

Hiller said he knows it's just a small thing, but this event offers an opportunity for everyone to join in and reduce that number.

"What I would encourage you to do is consider a hungry child as your own child and seek to feed them in the same way," he said.

The Food for Kids Drive will continue throughout the month of April and into May with those Hiller's Market locations collecting non-perishable items for the Lighthouse Emergency Services pantry.
