State officials launch new program to promote housing stabilization in Michigan communities
(CBS DETROIT) - State health and housing officials have launched a new program to promote housing stabilization and address social determinants of health across Michigan.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) have partnered to launch "Good Housing=Good Health."
This new program is part of the MDHHS' strategy that provides solutions to social determinants of health that cover the different factors, such as housing, that affect a Michigan resident's health. In addition, it will incorporate the state's housing plan, which shows the factors that contribute to housing access.
"Housing affordability is a major problem for many families, as too many of our neighbors are spending a third of their income or more on housing their family," said Elizabeth Hertel. "This new program is a critical part of our goal of keeping children safe and keeping families together, as we work collaboratively to make Michigan the safest and best place in America to raise kids and nurture families."
The program will provide funding to local health partners so they are able to hire and retain community health workers, who are also known as navigators. They will work to connect residents to housing resources.
According to state officials, the "Good Housing=Good Health" plan offers a wide range of services including:
- housing stabilization
- navigation and outreach services
- referrals
- emergency shelter diversion services
- MI Bridges benefits assistance and other services
"Creating thriving, healthy communities is a collaborative effort," said Amy Hovey, executive director of MSHDA. "By partnering with MDHHS on the Good Housing = Good Health program we're expanding essential services and creating more pathways to stable, safe housing for all Michiganders."
The program partners with local health departments and community organizations to increase housing access, provide education and resources and enhance the health and well-being of residents.
