After the dust has settled over the parade and the Fun Run, Cinco de Mayo is far from over in Mexicantown.
This year marks 149 years of Mexican Independence so head over to West Vernor Highway to enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds of Mexico in Detroit.

As its name implies Cafe con Leche is more of a coffee and milk type place. They offer Latin American drinks like Champurrado, which is like hot chocolate. The staff is friendly and will most likely remember your drink from your previous visit. The decor is warm and modern. There is a sense of community in the store with lots of fliers and a diverse set of patrons. Free wi-fi is available, but you'll need to get the code from an employee. Be forewarned, they are closed on Sundays.

The sign out front reads, "The House of the original Mexican taco" -- and they deliver. The prices are awesome. They serve pinto beans on the side instead of refried, which is a refreshing change. Be warned that the menu may contain some items that gringos are not used to seeing like tripe and tongue. No alcohol, so if you're craving a margarita, go to Xochimilco. Cash only

The Margaritas are very reasonably priced at Xochimilco (just say "so-shi's"). The food is also good although some would say it's "Americanized", meaning you'll find lots of tacos, nachos, cheese and sour cream. Who says that's such a bad thing though. Yum!

Explore the world of pastry Mexicantown style! The Tres Leches Cake comes highly recommended, but you can't go wrong with any of the treats here. As with most authentic bakeries you won't find much in the way of English descriptions, but if you ask the ladies behind the counter nicely they will describe items you're interested in.

Yo Amo Southwest / INSPIRE Exhibit Closing Reception
Yo Amo Southwest features local artists Erik Howard and Lisa Luevanos who show their view of life in the Community through a series of vibrant photographs. The exhibit leaves West Vernor for Woodward Avenue to expose a new group of people to life in Southwest Detroit! Details to come!
The exhibit has been on display at the Southwest Detroit Business Association atrium located at 7752 West Vernor since December of 2010. The public is invited to attend this event celebrating the final night of the exhibit.
Food will be served from La Terraza Restaurant on Lawndale.
Discover the Mexicantown Pedestrian Bridge and Plaza Community Art Project
The pedestrian bridge which is easily visible from the Ambassador Bridge was unveiled on Cinco de Mayo 2010. Michigan artist Hubert Massey was commissioned to create two pieces of art at the bridge to illustrate the Mexicantown community. The two two pieces include, "Spiral of Life," a tile mosaic spanning 40 feet long and 5 feet high located on the eastern wall of the bridge and "The Spiral Kinship", a 12 foot tall metal sculpture.
