Grandfather Dies Day After Fire Claims Life Of Teenage Grandson
MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A 70-year-old Monroe County man has died from injuries sustained in a house fire that also killed his 18-year-old grandson.
Reports say Ruben Castorena died Wednesday evening at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo, a day after his Monroe Township home went up in flames.
The fire took off around 1 a.m. at a home in the Dunbar Estates subdivision, near Dunbar and Telegraph roads. When fire crews arrived on the scene, the home was engulfed in flames.
Five people were inside the multi-generational home when the fire started. Alex Johnson, a junior at Monroe High School, was found dead in an upstairs bedroom. Castorena suffered serious burns while exiting the home and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Reports say he had burns over 60 percent of his body.
Castorena's 74-year-old wife, 42-year-old daughter and 16-year-old granddaughter all escaped. The older women were also transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
