Gordie Howe's Health Improving A Bit After Series Of Strokes, Son Says

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Red Wings great Gordie Howe is now able to walk with just a little assistance after suffering a series of strokes.

His son Marty Howe told WWJ's Sandra McNeill Wednesday that he didn't think his father would make it to Christmas after he suffered two major strokes and eight minor strokes and was hospitalized several times over the past three weeks.

"The last time he was in (the hospital) it wasn't a stroke; it was mostly dehydration," Marty Howe said. "I think he was kind of getting depressed and not eating properly, didn't wanna drink, and it ended up getting him in that shape; and it looks just like a stroke. He was almost in a coma at that point."

Marty Howe said Gordie is now able to speak "a little bit" and suffers from ongoing dementia following his last stroke. "He just lost his whole right side and his speech — so he couldn't walk, couldn't use his right hand and coudn't talk, so it was a pretty bad one."

"He's actual able to walk; you know, he's not gonna win any speed races, but he can go on his own power. We just spot him."

Marty Howe said it's all about baby steps, but after believing his dad might not make it, he's happy his recovery is now moving in the right direction.
