Gator's Blog: Where Does The Blame Lie?
We've seen a very disturbing trend from our Detroit Lions that began weeks ago following a post game handshake between two head coaches. From the moment Jim Schwartz took exception to Jim Harbaugh's burly mitts, the Lions' sense of discipline has eroded consistently.
It wasn't long after the Schwartz chased down Harbaugh that the Lions found themselves losing their collective heads in the city that blows...Chicago. In that game, several personal foul calls typified a chippy effort, resulting in a disappointing loss. Ndamukong Suh then made an effort to clear his name by meeting with the NFL commissioner to ensure him that he was not a dirty player.
About a week after that meeting, Suh found himself in the national spotlight for stomping the arm of a Green Bay Packer, thus ejected from the Thanksgiving contest and then suspended two games. Which brings us to last night in New Orleans, Sunday Night Football, and right back in that national spotlight again!
What the nation saw is what we've seen all too much of this season, an undisciplined team that clearly has talent but more of a talent to shoot themselves in the foot by taking stupid after the whistle penalties. Enough is enough, the Lions can't afford to make these mistakes on a weekly basis, and frankly they can't afford it at all with just 4 weeks left in the season.
I was glad to see and hear Dominic Raiola address the situation; the newer guys to this team have no idea of the futility of this organization. Guys like Raiola, Jason Hanson and Jeff Backus have been here too long to sit by idly and watch this thing implode. The Lions are good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to afford the stupidity that comes with after the whistle penalties.
