Funeral In Gaines Twp. For Michigan Airman Killed In Germany
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A funeral service has been held in West Michigan for an airman killed in a bike-train accident in Germany.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Weems was killed last week when a train struck him as he biked several miles from Ramstein Air Base.
The 24-year-old was a 2005 graduate of Byron Center High School and worked in the 86th Maintenance Squadron, maintaining C-130 transport aircraft.
The service took place at Cornerstone Church in Kent County's Gaines Township. WOOD-TV reports members of the military provided an official entourage.
Weems died just days before his enlistment was complete.
A motorcade escorting his flag-draped coffin entered Byron Center on Monday evening, ending at Cook Funeral Home.
Survivors include Weems' parents, three siblings and his fiancee.
