Ford Freedom Awards Honor Champions Of Justice

DETROIT (WWJ) - Sixth Circuit court of Appeals Judge Damon Keith was honored as a Ford Freedom Scholar as part of the 13th annual Ford Freedom Awards at the Charles R. Wright Museum of African American History.

"I'm just thrilled to get this recognition, I don't know if I'm deserving of it or not," says Judge Keith.

WWJ's Stephanie Davis reports that Judge Keith is known as a vigorous defender of constitutional and civil rights.

Mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing, was on hand as part of those honoring the award winners at the black tie event.

"He's one of the special people, not only in this city but in this country, and everything he gets ... he deserves," says Bing.

Also honored was the late Federal judge Constance Baker Motley, the first African American women to serve as a federal judge.

"It's good for this recognition to come on this date, in this museum, with the honoree, posthumously, Constance Baker Motley," says Keith of Motley.

Baker Motley wrote the original complaint in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education back in 1950.
