Fire Engulfs Home In Monroe County; Teen Killed, Grandfather Critical [VIDEO]
MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A fast-moving house fire in Monroe County claimed the life of a teenager and critically injured his grandfather, while three more family members escaped the flames.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 14000 block of Tiara Avenue in the Dunbar Estates subdivision, near Dunbar and Telegraph roads in Monroe Township. When fire crews arrived on the scene, the home was engulfed in flames.
Five people were inside the multi-generational home when the fire started. An 18-year-old man was found dead in an upstairs bedroom; his 70-year-old grandfather suffered serious burns while exiting the home and was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo in critical condition. The teen's 42-year-old mother, 74-year-old grandmother and 16-year-old sister all escaped; the mother and grandmother were also transported to St. Vincent's Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition.
At this point, authorities say it's too early to determine a cause of the fire.
The Monroe Township Fire Department was assisted by LaSalle Township, Ida Township, and the City of Monroe Fire Departments. The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing.
