'False' Text Alert About Gunman Causes Concern On University Of Michigan Campus

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A text and email alert sent out by the University of Michigan warning of a gunman in the chemistry building was a false alarm.

The alert was sent out to more than 100,000 students and faculty around 8:55 a.m. Wednesday.

By 9:06 a.m. the alert had been cancelled, with the school saying "No threat is present. Updates to follow." Officials have since given the "all clear" and say the campus is safe.

Spokesperson Diane Brown told WWJ that the U-M Department of Public safety received a report about a man with a gun going in to the chemistry building; but, within five minutes, it was confirmed that there was no weapon.

The chemistry building as well as some neighboring buildings were briefly locked down as a precaution.

Other details weren't immediately released.

An investigation is ongoing.
