Eric Thomas: An Open Letter To Ndamukong Suh

Let me first say that I am a Lions fan. I am not impartial at all. This was a disease I was born with and I cannot do anything about it. Many of my friends have other teams that they cheer for, and have fantasy leagues that distract their attention from the actual games on the field. Not me. I only care about the Lions. I have season tickets. I completely lost my voice at the Monday night game and I lost my mind at the Viking game this year.

I saw the interview with Hannah Storm. As a Lions fan, from the bottom of my heart, I beg of you: Stop. Please stop granting interviews. As a crazy Lions fan that has brayed your name from section 136 and beer on my breath: Stop giving me reasons not to like you.

The whole "stomp" and "dirty player thing" is going to go away on its own. The great thing about being in the news is that eventually you become old news. You have been the new hotness in the league the last two years, and after that no one is going to care. Warren Sapp was controversial for about a minute then he just became known as a "good defensive player". This will be your label to wear as well some day. But you need to stop talking about it.

I had completely stopped caring about the stomp. When I glance at the library of Lions history on the shelf, the spine of the 2011 season reads "playoff appearance". The stomp incident has dropped to the floor and been trod upon. I no more remember that than other tertiary details from two weeks out of the season. Something happened this season involving Ronnie Brown also but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

You doing that interview with ESPN reminded me of it. I was angry again. Apparently now you've added a new layer to the cake, claiming that you were simply trying to "get out of the way" of the Green Bay defense. ESPN even tossed you a camera angle that might support your argument like a lost version of the Zapruder film that means we shouldn't believe our lying eyes. Hearing you say these things reminded me of all the reasons I was mad that week.

I blame you for this because I don't want to be mad at you. You are arguably the best player on my absolute favorite team. You made rooting for the Lions cool. Most of my life when I tell people that I am a Lions fan they reacted to like it was a punch line. People would double over and point at me, snorting "What?!" and calling people over to join in the fun. In 2010, everything changed. Claiming the Lions as your team was met with an outburst of "SUH IS A BEAST!"

I am going to look the other way on pretty much everything you do but enough already. I don't want to root against you! Please don't make me! We had all forgotten about this incident because you were a model citizen after you returned from your suspension. You stopped just short of offering piggyback rides into the end zone.

Look, it's not like you are Rafael Palmeiro. You didn't perjure yourself in front of congress. It's not like you owe anyone an apology at this point. You paid your fines and you served your suspension. Stay off of TV for a couple of months. You have the endorsements and no one has dropped you, be thankful for that. Go race cars. Work out in that palace you built in Nebraska. When you come back for training camp you can blow off the questions one more time and then we will all be talking about whoever the Lions got in free agency and the draft. You will be old news until you do something awesome on the field next year.

I understand that those two weeks were probably rough for you, but it wasn't that big of a deal to Lions fans. We have already moved on. Your turn to do the same.
