Dog lovers are sometimes torn between not leaving their dogs at home during the day and working so that they can afford dog food. The increasing popularity of Take Your Dog To Work Day, held each year in June, has caused some companies to consider pet-friendly employment policies. Several locations in Metro Detroit allow well-behaved dogs in the workplace all year, and the employees and owners couldn't be happier.

Eiler Communications

Ann Arbor, MI 48108

It may be high-tech regarding public relations and information technology, but Eiler Communications is old school when it comes to corporate culture. The firm is based on a mentorship model, with programs designed to encourage employees to grow and advance their careers. Dogs are allowed in various areas of the office, typically on Fridays to end the work week on a fun note. Eiler is experiencing rapid growth and resumes are always welcomed.

Google, Inc.

Ann Arbor, MI 48104

Google is well known for allowing dogs in the workplace, and the Ann Arbor office is no exception. While the official dog policy is no longer available, an archived document shows that dogs must be licensed and vaccinated and they are not permitted in common areas. The comfort of co-workers and visitors to the company are always a consideration, and employees must receive permission from a supervisor before bringing their dog into the office. Google also offers its employees a comprehensive health plan, reimbursement for job-related education, free legal advice and discounted legal services and an enhanced family leave offering. Job openings vary and Google claims it is "always looking" for great people.

The Mall at Partridge Creek
17420 Hall Road
Clinton Township, MI 48038
(586) 226-0330

The entire Partridge Creek mall is dog-friendly, catering to shoppers who want to bring their pooch along with them. Dog comfort stations are set up throughout the common area of the open-air mall. In addition, many individual stores allow dogs, some with both shoppers and employees. Dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier and retractable leashes are not allowed. Compliance with dog laws regarding vaccination and licensing is required, and the mall reserves the right to remove dogs that are causing a disturbance. Job openings with the mall itself or one of the stores are posted on the Partridge Creek website.

Marx Layne & Company
31420 Northwestern Highway, Suite 100
Farmington Hills, MI 48334
(248) 855-6777
www.marxlayne.com

Marx Layne's pet policy began when the owner's son went off to college and no one was home during the day to care for Miles, the family's Golden Retriever. Miles had been coming to the office on Saturdays, so bringing him during the week was an easy choice. The decision expanded to allow other staff members to bring their dogs to work, too. The marketing and public relations firm's clients enjoy seeing the dogs, though the canine companions generally stay out of the meeting and conference rooms. Marx Layne combines the fun atmosphere with a thorough benefits package, on-the-job training and professional growth opportunities.

Trainers Academy
950 W. Maple Road, Suite A
Troy, MI 48084
(248) 244-1372

Many dog owners utilize a doggy daycare when they're working to avoid leaving their dogs alone all day. For Trainers Academy employees, the doggy daycare is part of the job. Staff dogs are able to attend training classes and participate in daycare activities. They even get their own bios on the Academy's website. Trainers Academy hires trainers, of course, but also employs customer service staff and daycare assistants.
