Doctors Discover An Easy Way To Reduce Stroke Risk

DETROIT (WWJ) - Doctors discover an easy way to reduce your risk of America's third leading killer.

A review of existing research finds people who get more fiber in their diets are less likely to have a stroke, compared to people who get less. Specifically, the researchers found the risk of suffering a stroke fell by seven percent for every seven grams of dietary fiber people reported eating every day.

The findings are important for two reasons: first, because the average American gets less than half the Institute of Medicine's recommendation of 35 grams of fiber a day. And second, because Americans suffer 800,000 strokes a year and effective treatments are limited.

Eating more fiber could be an easy, inexpensive way to lower your risk.
