Detroit's Target Fireworks Set To Blast Off

DETROIT (WWJ) - Final preparations are underway for the 53rd Annual Target Fireworks, which are set to blast off on the Detroit riverfront just after 10 o'clock Monday night.

WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that 10,000 fireworks and hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected at one of the biggest fireworks shows in America. The 53rd Annual Target Fireworks are scheduled to kick off exactly at 10:06 Monday evening along the Detroit River.

Ron was surveying the scene from right in front of one of the barges holding all of the pyrotechnics. As of 5:00 Monday morning, people were already spotting out the areas that they were planning to be in to watch the fireworks.

Prime viewing spots include Hart Plaza, Belle Isle, along the Detroit River walk, historic Fort Wayne and Riverside Park. The better the spot, the earlier you'll want to arrive.

Keep in mind that you can only park in so many different places. The immediate surface streets will be closing later in the afternoon, with the freeways leading into the city closing around 6:00 in the evening.

Parade company president Tony Michaels says don't be fooled by the slower start of the show, with the theme "Something to Believe In".

"We're sending a message, you know, for people to come together, and it should be wonderful.  Then, get ready. Right after that quiet moment in the beginning, it is gonna take off," said Michaels.

Micheals said it will take more than scattered rain showers in the forecast to keep the show out of the sky. (Keep an eye on the weather at this link).

How safe will it be for attendees at the fireworks? Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee says it'll be pretty much all hands on deck for fireworks detail.
