Detroiters Rally Against Welfare Cuts
DETROIT (WWJ) - A demonstration was held Thursday in front of Cadillac Place to protest cuts to welfare benefits.
About 100 people attended the rally, which protestors called a "resurrection march."
"They call resurrection marches as we work to resurrect the spirit of justice, the spirit of compassion, in the worst job market, the worst housing market," said welfare rights organization chairwoman Maureen Taylor.
"This is a government that is targeting children," she said.
Angela Nelson was among also the protestors.
"I've done everything I was supposed to do. I obtained a job, I had children, I went to college. Now my unemployment is about to run out, so what am I supposed to do?" she said.
About 1,100 Michigan families will lose monthly cash assistance on October 1st under a new state law that caps benefits at 48 months, with few exceptions.
