Detroit Tigers Notes And Quotes 9-6-11
--TE Brandon Pettigrew has decided to change his jersey number. After wearing No. 84 his first two years, he's now No. 87. "Maybe I won't get as many pass interference calls against me," he said, laughing. The reason for the change - he wore No. 87 at Oklahoma State.
--LB Justin Durant can't seem to settle on a number either. The one he's worn his whole career, No. 56, is off limits. It was worn by Hall-of-Famer Joe Schmidt and has been retired. He wore No. 57 through camp but now has switched to No. 52. Rookie Doug Hogue will now wear No. 57.
--Schwartz was asked if he felt any trepidation about committing to a rookie punter and holder (Ryan Donahue) after the consistency of Nick Harris. "With rookies at any position, I don't want to say you are concerned, but it's something you thing about," he said. "But he's proven that he can punt and he's proven he can hold. We've seen everything we need to see from Ryan and we're not hoping to see something different in the regular season."
--On setting goals for the season, Schwartz said, "I don't know when the playoffs start, but they don't start on Sept. 11. We have Tampa Bay then and there's a long way to go. If our eyes are on Tampa Bay then our eyes are on the right thing."
