Detroit Teachers Gather To Hear Plans To Avoid Payless Payday

DETROIT (WWJ) - Hundreds of Detroit Public School teachers gathered at the Masonic Temple Thursday evening to hear from their union as the district awaits word on whether it will receive $50 million to avoid payless paydays next month.

Rashelle Green is a licensed masters-level school social worker within Detroit Public Schools.

"We would hope that the state will take accountability and pay or give the $50 million from the rainy-day school fund - those are funds that are set aside for school districts that are struggling financially - we would like a forensic audit to determine what happened to the money within DPS," said Green.

Lansing lawmakers are working on legislation that would provide the $50 million dollar funding although it's not clear exactly when the measure would reach the governor's desk.

The Detroit school district, which has been under state control since 1999, is facing a $515 million budget deficit.
