City Council Delays Vote On Bing's Budget Compromise
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit City Council has postponed a vote on Detroit Mayor Bing's request to restore $30 million to the city budget.
City Council President Charles Pugh said Bings request would have gone down in defeat and, in the spirit of compromise, council members are giving Bing until Tuesday to present an amendment that Council can agree on.
"The point is, people at home need to know that these are ongoing conversations. And we have to remember that the council is being fiscally responsible, and, you know, that's how you avoid emergency management," said Pugh.
Pugh said the Mayor is meeting with individual council members.
Earlier this month, Council voted 8-1 to cut an additional $50 million beyond Bing's budget recommendation. The mayor is threatening cuts to city service and public safety if $30,000 isn't restored.
The budget deadline is June 30.
