Detroit Adds 29 New Trucks To Help Clear Streets Of Snow

DETROIT (AP) - New trucks have been added since last winter to help Detroit clear city streets of snow.

The city says the 29 trucks will allow it to retire some older vehicles. Each of the new trucks is equipped with front and under-body plows and salt spreaders.

Detroit will have 73 trucks available to clear 674 miles of major streets and roads. Private contractors plow 1,880 miles of residential streets if more than six inches of snow falls.

Public Works Director Ron Brundidge says this year's fleet of trucks will be "the largest and youngest" the city has had "in many years."

The city also is adding 41 more drivers which will increase staffing this winter to 156. Openings still are available for people with valid commercial driver's licenses.
