Deputy's Son Gets 40-70 Years For Killing Girl
TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - The son of a Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputy will spend up to 70 years in prison for killing a teenage girl. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Circuit Judge Thomas Power on Friday sentenced Robert Jensen Schwander to serve 40 to 70 years.
The 18-year-old Schwander was convicted in October of second-degree murder in the death of Carly Lewis of Traverse City. Carly's body was found June 14 in a sand pile at the city's public works complex. Schwander lived with Carly's family temporarily after being kicked out of his own home.
Prosecutors contended he plotted Carly's death and fatally stabbed her. Schwander told jurors Carly died after he put her in a choke hold down during an argument but never intended to kill her.
