Dan Dickerson's Game Recap 4-8-11

Victor Martinez didn't wait long to deliver a big hit in his first home game wearing the Olde English D. Martinez delivered a 3-run, bases-clearing double in the first inning of the Tigers' Home Opener....and the Tigers went on to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Jhonny Peralta added an RBI double off Kyle Davies later in the first, and that was more than enough for Max Scherzer and the Tigers' bullpen. Scherzer gave up a run in the third, and worked out of a bases loaded jam with two outs in the 4th, but otherwise worked 6 solid innings to get his first win. Scherzer gave up 7 hits, walked two and struck out three. Daniel Schlereth came on with two on and two outs in the 7th - and got Kila Ka'aihue to ground out (a nice diving stop by Rhymes) to end the threat, and preserve a 5-2 Tigers' lead. Joaquin Benoit worked a 1-2-3 8th inning, and Jose Valverde got his 2nd Save by working an uneventful 9th. Martinez lead the Tigers with 3 RBIs, Jhonny Peralta added two on a double and sacrifice fly. A crowd of 44,799 jammed Comerica Park - the 4th largest crowd in Comerica history. The Tigers improve to 3-4 with the win, the Royals fall to 4-3. Phil Coke starts for the Tigers tomorrow, Bruce Chen is on the mound for KC. First pitch is at 4:10.
