Court: Woman Gets Windfall From Ex-Husband's Insurance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A woman can collect a $120,000 life insurance windfall after the death of her former husband, despite their divorce years ago.

John Lett never changed the beneficiary on the policy. The Michigan appeals court overturned a decision by a Kent County judge and ruled in favor of Nancy Henson.

Craig Lett argued that Henson was listed as a beneficiary only in case his father had died before paying off a debt from their marriage, which ended in 2009. The debt was paid long before John Lett's death in 2014.

But the appeals court says there's no evidence of fraud by Henson. In a decision released Friday, the court says John Lett had plenty of time to take his ex-wife off the insurance policy if that's what he wanted.
