Cold Temps Increase Demand For Shelter
Wind chills are already well below zero and there are a lot of people in metro Detroit who are at risk.
Now with the cold weather here, the demand for shelter is increasing.
Because of the sour economy, the ranks of the homeless have grown dramatically, and in some cases, warming centers have seen increases of 25%. The Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness says the number of those without a place to go now numbers 100,000 in our state, a jump of 16% between 2009 and 2008.
Human Service agencies say they're worried because long-range weather forecasts are that temperatures will be colder this winter.
WWJ Newsradio 950 will post a list of warming centers as soon as it becomes available.
