City Council Member Addressing Issues At The Street Level
DETROIT (WWJ) - One Detroit city council member is taking to street corners to reach residents.
Detroit Council member Mary Sheffield will set-up at three different corners reports Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis, and walk the blocks in her District 5 starting Friday as part of an initiative called "Occupy the Corner Detroit."
"Literally we'll be on the corner. Because it's getting cold, not sure people will be outside," said Sheffield.
"It's a movement to ... simply engage, connect and empower those who are in need - those that are living in struggling neighborhoods, those who are living in high crime areas," she said.
The first stop: Chene and Lafayette where Sheffield says in addition to resources, they'll hand out information about job openings.
She says if it's cold and people are not outside -- she'll start knocking on doors.
"We have partnered with Detroit Employment Solutions to connect us with some opening jobs - that are open as we speak," she said.
